Growing up in the church, I learned the worst possible thing your daughter could do, would be to have sex outside of marriage. I tried to believe that it was exclusive to just that; but sometimes I think according to the church the worst possible thing your daughter could do, would be to have sex at all. There is this notion of “purity” that is implemented shortly after our birth. I’ve stood in countless church lobbies, watching as old women oggle at baby boys and say,

“oh look! what a little ladies man!” or “you’re going to be quite the heartbreaker someday!”

However, in contrast the mere sight of an aesthetically pleasing baby girl evokes,

“ohhhh just wait ‘till she’s sixteen, she’s gonna be trouble!” or “I won’t ever let a little boy lay a finger on you!” etc etc etc….this is usually followed by the “daddy’s gonna bring out the shotgun” jokes, and honestly I just get tired of seeing such adult assumptions and inaccuracies placed upon the shoulders of infants.

With these statements you have unknowingly implied that said baby boy will be involved with a LOT of girls one day, and he will probably break some of their hearts because there will just be SOOO many of them lined up at his door. And you think this why? because he smiled at you.

Babies do that.

However, in terms of said baby girl you have unknowingly implied that when she’s sixteen ( which someday she will be) she will be developed. And she will attract boys. And she will be a whole LOTTA trouble Dad, because she will want to touch them, and be touched by them, and that’s a whole lotta “trouble” no, it will be a “problem” because-

Sometimes I get the feeling that this odd sex/purity-protection mission instilled into a father/daughter relationship makes women feel like they are being passed from the hands of one man into the next.
Just an ownership exchange.

Now, I can say with great certainty that this is not the relationship with my father and I, he has always given me room to be exactly what I wanted to be ( with obvious healthy boundaries) Yet, I still see this everywhere.

Sometimes I just wanna whisper into the ears of church- going baby girls,

” Listen everyone here loves you so much, but they are never going to know your body like YOU know your body. Your body is entirely your own. And just fuck the rest”

“female purity” is a church-ordained name for a culture of shame.
